Light has played a role in spirituality and religion throughout history. It has symbolized knowledge, the soul, and even physical manifestations of the divine. In conjunction with the exhibition You and I, Horizontal II (2006) by artist Anthony McCall, CAM is pleased to present a special screening of Spirituality, an episode of the popular PBS documentary series Art in the Twenty-First Century. The episode features interviews by prominent contemporary artists, including Beryl Korot, Ann Hamilton, John Feodorov, Shahzia Sikander, and James Turrell—all exploring themes of faith and religious symbolism in their practice. Father Terrance Dempsey, founding director of the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art at Saint Louis University, will lead a discussion following the screening.
